Announcing the HAVA Player Mac SDK

Postby Gary-MM on Fri Jan 16, 2009 11:04 am

Dear HAVA Community,

Monsoon Multimedia would like to thank you for all the support, feedback and enthusiasm shown for our products. We received an overwhelming response for our products at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. We would now like to announce the release of the HAVA SDK for Mac OS.

Mac support has been one of the top requested features by our customers and partners. Several times we have been approached by Hava users who want to build their own innovative applications on top of HAVA. We are starting with the Beta program for the Mac SDK and we invite your participation.

To participate, please drop us an email at macsdk@monsoonmultimedia.com with “Mac SDK Beta“ written in the subject line. We will send you the details of Hardware and Software resources required for using the SDK along with a consent form. We will send you a download link once we receive your completed consent form.

Beta Invites will be issued on a first come, first served basis. For any additional information or clarification please feel free to contact the Mac SDK Program Manager at macsdk@monsoonmultimedia.com or contact our tech support executive on our toll free help line.

Our support help line number is 1(866)-YES-HAVA or 1-(866)-937-4282 and our office hours are 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM PST Monday – Saturday.

Thanks ,
Monsoon Multimedia Mac SDK team
Best regards,

I tried to sign up, a copy came back as "user unknown" (I suppose this was supposed to be routed to a specific persoon). Is the beta program still active?

Hi,
I am also wondering if Mac SDK beta is still alive. I sent in email and got back near immediate response with a ticket number, and stating that someone would contact me soon.

That was weeks ago, when I try to reply now, it bounces back the email as undeliverable.

Is there any info on this Beta?

I guess it got terminated. Despite jumping through hoops nothing got delivered. The second Slingbox allows streams to be recorded onto the hard drive correctly, everyone is onto that. It is not as though people are disloyal to HAVA by any means. A year, 2 years, longer and still nothing not even real communication. Just the odd drop of info that turns out to be fruitless.

Had the source code been provided when I asked for it or had the project been made Open Source, we would all be sitting here saying how great the HAVA is. To be fair, the hardware works a treat but the lack of a Mac client has basically meant people painstakingly have to record in Windows, then get out of Windows to go to their Mac to then edit the videos with a video editing suite that only a Mac can offer.

It was tedious at first but we all put up with it because we all want to keep our HAVA but what is more valuable to the user. The HAVA or the Mac? Sorry but the Mac comes out on top every single time and that is the choice in front of us all.

Once Slingbox sort it out, it is game over.

Sent an email for the Beta program a few days ago...this is all I have heard in reply:
Thank you for contacting Monsoon Mutlimedia's support e-mail for the Mac SDK program.

We will take care of your inquiry as soon as possible.

You can reply to this email with additional information as long as you keep the ticketid in the subject.

Best regards,

HAVA Mac SDK team

COME ON HAVA! Bring us some Mac support! Sling's Mac player is gorgeous, but I know Hava can do better!

You can't get what they don't know. After waiting so long I am really dubious about the Mac client now and if we will ever get it. Not sure how many years we will be waiting if we do. I only come back here every month or so in the hope I am proven wrong but even if a Mac client dropped tomorrow, I can't say the wait has not been frustrating.

Once Slingbox can record properly, it is game over.

Any reason why this can not be brute forced. You do own the equipment since you bought it and it is on your local network. Any legal people have any reasons?

He shouldn't really have to brute force something he owns when they can simply give the password out.

What defies belief here is the sheer amount of technical knowledge this forum has with HAVA owners yet this is not being taken advantage of. If the source code, passwords, port numbers and all relevant technical details were released, not only would HAVA by now have a Mac, Linux and Windows client working flawlessly at no extra charge to themselves but it would save them time and money on their own technical team.

It is just ridiculous to be honest. It is as if they are closely guarding everything in this bottleneck of a development setup they have which is just going to stifle their own growth long term.

Keep it all a secret. It doesn't matter really. Capture video alternatives are already starting to appear that are OS independent and then what? Goodbye HAVA from everyone who owns one who is not tied to Windows.

Open sourcing HAVA would be the coolest thing they could possibly do. If they open source it and a linux client is made, HAVA would have a huge dev team and be really freaking awesome.

Yeah it would be really epic. A universal player would soon appear and we would have more Mac, Linux and BSD users purchasing HAVA devices. I just can't see the business sense of the development bottleneck here.

If you had a shop and you let one person buy stuff and told ten to go away, it doesn't work. If you sell to only men but not women, you isolate half your custom.

Yes, Windows is the most used OS but tons of people who do video editing typically use a Mac. It is too much hassle to connect it up to your Windows, then transfer it to a Mac. A Mac client is not going to arrive tomorrow but the decision to make this Open Source could be made TODAY.

Has anything been done with this at all? I see a lot of potential here, but from what I read there is a huge disconnect between setting expectations and getting things done. I'm done with sling media over their selling hardware they won't support but I'm waiting to jump ship till there is mac support. I saw the SDK as the lifeboat to at least getting what I had with my slingbox on the mac as a stopgap on the way to being able to watch on my iphone but I'm beginning to wonder if i shouldn't just forget about it and move on. No one seems to be addressing those waiting for the SDK even though it was announced 3 months ago. As a developer I submitted my request a few minutes ago but I'm curious if anyone who submitted before me has gotten anything or if the NDA is such that you are unable to talk about anything related to the SDK once you receive it?

Great news! :D Or maybe we should ask, "How limited?" :?:

I think the answer is "not very limited at all" since Gary sent me the SDK. Not a peep out of all those Mac developers who were hounding Monsoon for this, though. What happened to those guys or gals?
